Resumen
Este trabalho analisa as reações populares à expansão do recrutamento militar no Brasil, durante a Guerra da Tríplice Aliança (1864-1870) e na União norte-americana, durante a Guerra Civil (1861-1865). A hipótese é de que a luta pelo recrutamento militar e a consequente expansão dos governos centrais em cada uma das sociedades nos períodos anteriores ao início de cada um dos conflitos interferiu nas prerrogativas locais e voluntárias que prevaleceram em cada uma das sociedades nos períodos pré-guerra.

This work analyzes popular reaction to the expansion of military recruitment in Brazil, during the Triple Alliance War against Paraguay (1864-1870), and in the American Union, during the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865). The hypothesis is that the struggle for military recruitment and consequent expansion of the central government in each of these countries interfered in local and voluntary procedures prevailing in each pre-war society.
